What to take on a short walk
A light bag, a little water, and fewer things to think about. Our simple approach to an afternoon outside.
A short walk should be easy to begin. When preparation becomes a project of its own, the walk is often the first thing to disappear. A small, familiar set of essentials keeps the decision simple.
Pack for the day you have
For an ordinary urban afternoon, start with water, comfortable shoes, a charged phone, and a layer suited to the forecast. A compact umbrella can be more useful than a heavy jacket on a mild but changeable day.
Carry only what you expect to use. If the walk passes shops and public transport, you will usually have more flexibility than you would on a remote route. Longer countryside walks need a different level of preparation.
Make room for one enjoyable extra
A pocket notebook, a paperback, or a small camera can give a walk a particular character. Choose one. A bag full of possibilities has a way of becoming a bag full of obligations.
Keep the route flexible
Save the starting point and the way home before you leave. Notice where you can stop if the weather turns. With these small decisions already made, you can spend more of the afternoon looking around.
The best kit is the one that lets you forget about it. Keep it light, keep it familiar, and make the next walk easy to say yes to.
